Ebenezer Riggs was born on January 26, 1806 in Oxford, CT. He married Julia M. Davis of Oxford on December 9, 1827. Together they had four children: Lucinda, Ebenezer Dewitt, Homer and Bernice. Ebenezer was a farmer and sheep herder during the early part of his life. Later in his life, he owned a sawmill that was located on his property that transported lumber for New York ship builders.The sawmill was operated by water and was located just below a pond. The water was brought down to the sawmill by a canal and then down a long plank flume. The water would fall on a wheel that was attached to a wooden crank that would operate the saw located inside the mill. This mill remained in operation for about 100 years.
Lucinda Riggs was born on December 29, 1828 in Oxford, CT. She married Henry Church, son of Sheldon Church of Seymour, CT on December 19, 1849. She died on May 6, 1906. Lucinda and Henry Church were buried in the Union Cemetery in Seymour. They had six children, one was Ebenezer Riggs Church, who is also buried in Union Cemetery in Seymour. Another child, Annie E. Church, died when she was four years old and is buried with her parents. To read more about the Church family history, click here.
Ebenezer Dewitt Riggs was born on July 31, 1832 in Oxford, CT. He married his first wife, Elizabeth Strong of Bethlehem, CT. After her death, he remarried a woman from New Haven. He was involved in the cutlery business in New Haven for quite some time. He died September 27, 1885.
Homer Riggs was born on April 30, 1837 in Oxford. He married Mary E.Davis of New Rochelle, N.Y. on December 24, 1866. He was a solider in the Civil War, where he lost an arm in battle. Close to the end of the war, he was appointed the position of pension agent with headquarters in Vermont. It is unknown when Homer died and where he was buried.
Bernice Riggs was born on July 12, 1841 in Oxford, CT. She married Charles A. Meigs of Quaker Farms in Oxford, CT on January 3, 1867. Charles Meigs owned a large farm and was involved in a bakery business, called  Meigs & Trott, which was located in Waterbury, CT. Bernice died on May 2, 1918 in Oxford. She is buried with her husband at Brookside Cemetery in Oxford.  They had three children, her son, David Tomilson died as an infant and is buried with them. Ebenezer's first wife, Julia, died on August 9, 1844 in Oxford. After Julia passed away, he married Frances A. Clark of Middlebury, CT,  on March 5, 1846. Together they had one child, Nathan Clark Riggs, who was born on March 9, 1848. Nathan married Caroline Lucy Smith, daughter of Shelton Smith of Oxford. Nathan was often depressed and committed suicide on December 29, 1891 by going to his room at the Riggs Homestead and shooting himself.
Ebenezer Riggs died on December 12, 1877. Frances, his second wife died on November 15, 1888. Ebenezer, his first wife Julia and his second wife Frances were both buried in the Congregational Church Cemetery, in Oxford, CT.
