Riggs Home Chestnut Tree Hill Road, Oxford, CT.
The first three pictures above are of Ebenezer Riggs financial ledger from 1849. The ledger pages depict a type of barter system, with one page listing debits and another page listing credits. Paper money was rarely used to pay for goods in the 1800's. People used to trade a good or service for another good or service and agree on price for each good or service rendered. Peter Joice was one of Ebenezer's nearby neighbors. The ledger entries show that Ebenezer and his neighbor, Peter were bartering back and forth to maintain their homes, buisnesses and care for themselves and their families.
The fourth picture of the Ebenezer Riggs Homestead. It was located on Chestnut Tree Hill Road, in Oxford, CT. The Homestead was accidentally burned in 1950. The property remained in the Riggs family until 1906, when Stephen Posick purchased it. Mr. Posick then sold the property to Isaac N. Albert of Waterbury. Mr Albert then sold the property to John B. Scozzafava in 1914. It was then sold to Benjamin Baurer who sold the property to the Seymour Water Company, who still owns the property today.
