All the maps on this page shows the location of Ebenezer Riggs Homestead
and Sawmill on Chestnut Tree Hill Rd., in Oxford, CT. The Homestead was
burned in 1950. The property remained in the Riggs family unitl 1906, when
Stephen Posick purchased it. The property was then sold to Isacc N. Albert
of Waterbury. Mr. Albert then sold it to John B. Scozzafava in 1914. He
then sold the property to Benjamin Baurer, who then sold it to the Seymour
Water Company, who still owns it today. Each of the maps above are clearly
marked with the locations of the Riggs Homestead and Sawmill.
The remains of the Riggs Sawmill still exist below the old Chestnut
Tree Hill pond. The sawmill cut and produced lumber used for New
York ship builders. The water that operated the sawmill came from the pond
which traveled down a canal and entered a plank flume. Then the water went
through a long tube, falling on a wheel that was attached to a wooden crank.
This crank would then operate the saw, making it run up and down at each
revolution of the wheel. The Sawmill operated for over 100 years and was
owned by Ebenezer Riggs toward the middle to late 1800's.
